23:33-- Guest_2804: In simple words, home staging means readying your house for sale. A lot of importance is given to presenting it in its best form, so that it attracts the most number of people. However, there is a difference between preparing the house for selling, and staging a house. For instance, plumbing repairs do not come under staging. You should see your house from a buyer's point of view and make changes and modifications accordingly. Selling a house is not a tough task, but selling it at the highest possible price, whilst keeping the buyer satisfied, can be difficult. 1. Uncluttering If you hire a professional stager, the first thing he will ask you to do is unclutter the house. Simply cleaning it is not enough. You have to unclutter every corner, shelf, and cupboard. The first rule of uncluttering is reducing the number of objects in the house. So get rid of extra chairs, books, DVDs, and even the extra cutlery in the kitchen. You can donate these things to a charity if you are not sure what to do with them.2. The Outside Counts No matter how uncluttered and pleasant your home may be on the inside, the first impression will still be made by how it looks on the outside. If landscaping seems like a costly option, you can simply mow the lawn and clean the doors and windows. Also, do not forget to clean the garage as well.3. Make it Neutral When your potential buyer is looking around the house, he is imagining himself living there. However, if it is filled with your personal things, he will feel like a guest in your home. Hence, clear all the family pictures and anything that indicates your and your family members' distinct presence there.4. Leaks and Creaks When someone wishes to buy a house, they look through every nook and cranny. Hence, check if there are any leaks anywhere in the house, or if the paint is coming off on any wall that is usually hidden from plain view. Get all these repaired.5. Remove Paintings or Wall Pieces If there is a painting or wall piece with a very heavy color scheme, take it down. To create a pleasant feeling in the house, hang up paintings with simple, soft colors.6. The Floors A worn carpet or creaking hardwood flooring are major turn offs. Repair the floor and spread a new carpet.7. Let Some Air In If you have moved into your new house, then you should try and take some time to open the doors and windows of your old house for a few hours everyday. This will ensure air circulation through the house and prevent it from getting stuffy and musty.8. Best Foot Forward Make your prospective buyer see what you saw in the house when your bought it. Accentuate all the good features about your house and make sure that the buyer notices them.9.Clean Some More You have to keep the whole house spotless at all times. This will lend a good feeling to the place. Look at the importance of this aspect from a buyer's point of view. 10. When the Buyer Arrives Remember the following pointers when the buyer comes to look at the house―do not follow him around everywhere, do not play very loud music, and do not try too hard to make the sale. Along with the above mentioned tips, you can find many more things to better the appearance of your house before selling it. Home staging is a very interesting field― and you can even take a certification course in this. tankless hot water heater ( «link» )
23:33-- Guest_5703: Did You Know? It really is a myth that brand new homes don't require foundation repairs. Actually, foundation repair works being completed in homes as early as 2 years old!the inspiration of a residence is affected by a few aspects, like moisture content into the soil, period, and existence of trees nearby the household. The most common reason behind harm to the building blocks is weakening associated with earth around and underneath the basis. It is both because of drought circumstances which result in the soil to dry and agreement, pulling on foundation, or because of atmosphere voids in the earth, due to that the basis basins, causing the external wall to revolve, thus damaging the foundation. The simplest way to look at the safety of foundation is always to phone a 3rd party structural engineer, who'll advice you from the further plan of action. For informative reasons, this article will supply you with the common signs that a property with a bad basis programs, along side a description of the various ways of restoration that may be undertaken.Signs of a Damaged Foundation☛ Sloping/bowed flooring ☛ Doors/windows that stick whenever opened or shut ☛ Gaps between door/window structures and sills ☛ Leaning/cracked chimney ☛ Gaps between walls while the floor/roof ☛ Leakage through the roof ☛ Cracked foundation walls ☛ Bowing/cracked walls ☛ Nails swallowing out ☛ Wallpaper peeling down alone ☛ broken floors/concrete with or without liquid leakage ☛ Water accumulation throughout the house after a spell of rainfall ☛ Uneven roofing ☛ Raised/lowered stairs or porch ☛ shape on walls/roof ☛ Soil separation near foundation OR cracked earth near foundation ☛ Wall rotation ☛ Sunk/lowered basis Patching is used to fill-up splits in wall space. Epoxy resin is used to fill in these types of splits. Initially, shot ports are fixed to your splits to allow the resin to enter all of them effortlessly. After healing, the resin hardens, avoiding further widening regarding the cracks and moisture entry. After placing epoxy resin, the shot harbors are eliminated using a hammer. Reboundable foam can also be used maintain down dampness. This really is a way in which a home with a poor basis is sustained by placing metal piers or heaps beneath it. It starts with excavation for the surface around the basis, accompanied by inserting the piers and filling the shaft with concrete for energy. Grout is placed underneath the piers to remove void rooms and present extra power. To-be stable, the piers should reach the bedrock or load-bearing strata. There are lots of variations of this technique, as explained below.Push piers is a method in which additional help is provided to the home by hydraulically inserting metal piers below it. The piers shift force from unstable soil to more competent soil or bedrock. This process is used to either support an existing construction, and also raise a sunken structure, rendering it a long-lasting solution. It is utilized as soon as the bedrock or powerful strata is near the top earth.Helical piers tend to be metal shafts with intermittent helices or screw-like turns. They've been driven like a screw in to the surface, unlike becoming pushed in. These are used in regions of challenging soil problems, to move load from unstable upper soil to more powerful load-bearing deep soil layers. It really is a-deep basis system which is used much more for industrial fundamentals, versus residential ones. Helical piers just take less room becoming inserted, and are also accustomed get over compressive causes or forces arising considering tension. They have been generally employed for bearing less heavy lots, like porches, stairways, etc., and may even be driven utilizing hand gear, if you will find room limitations.Steel piers are accustomed to support or boost houses with weakened fundamentals. These are typically driven into the ground, similar to press piers, and are also weighed straight down because of the load of your home. The metal pipes made use of are susceptible to deterioration, misalignment, and bending problems, along with becoming quite expensive. It requires less space for operation.Slab piers are acclimatized to support or boost concrete fundamentals that require help. It is a really expensive procedure, and it has high space limitations. The slab piers are driven by helical methods or forced by push pier methods. The method transfers force from volatile top earth to much deeper, more powerful layers. Whenever slab pauses, further raising for the foundation becomes a challenge. Success prices in raising slabs have-been low. This technique involves drilling of shafts directly into the building blocks, and after that the bottom of the shafts are widened like a bell shape by using unique bits. Steel rebars are placed to the shaft, before concrete is poured into it and permitted to dry. This might take ranging from 1 - 14 days. Afterward, the home is raised and positioned on the bell piers. The drawbacks with this system consist of requirement of hefty equipment, risk of water seepage, and long-time requirement. This process assists support bowing basis and cellar walls. Bowing occurs because increased lateral stress from soil on a wall. Once this force increases beyond a specific limitation, the wall begins to bulge. Inside method, a several-feet deep opening is dug in to the surface, several foot out of the basis wall. After that a steel rod is inserted in to the basis wall from within, such that it hits the opening. A steel plate is fixed to the end associated with rod inside the gap, and another is fixed to another end. Then the pole is tightened, pulling the wall surface back-up right. This technique requires regular rod-tightening. This process involves placing precast concrete cylinders one upon another, below the foundation, to be stabilized. A hole is dug below the foundation slab, while the cylinders tend to be inserted, accompanied by placing the slab upon them. The power here is the fat of the home, and therefore, there isn't any prior sign of how deep the cylinders is certainly going. Despite becoming very cost-effective techniques, it has a number of disadvantages, like misalignment of cylinders due to lateral pressure of soil, breaking of pilings, cylinders placing too reduced for help, an such like. One significant downside usually, whenever the pilings sink very deep (beyond the refusal point) they might cause the slab to split. This method is less time intensive though. This is a variation associated with preceding method. The sole difference is that, inside method, a cable or rebar is placed together with the cylinders, hence keeping them in positioning. The time needed in this strategy is less, as you don't have to attend before cement gets consolidated. However, there are certain difficulties with this system, more really serious one being that, as a result of the cable or rebar, the entire column it self may be skewed, instead of individual cylinders into the pushed piling method. Another is, the holes produced in the cylinders for inserting the cables could potentially cause liquid incursion. This process is quite similar to the pressed pilings method, other than, as opposed to concrete cylinders, metallic pilings are utilized. The weight of the house is once again the driving force. The technique aims to reduce the drawbacks of pressed pilings strategy, by utilizing metallic instead of cement. The full time needed within method is shorter, since one doesn't always have to wait till tangible combination. However, the method may fall prey to deterioration of steel pilings, failure to reach the refusal point, thus limiting stability and incurring large cost of materials. In addition, because of the decreased width associated with the columns in this case, the security suffers. One essential downside is the fact that, when hefty objects in the house tend to be reassembled, an uneven load is placed on the pilings, that may cause misalignment. This technique is used to boost or stabilize sinking foundation pieces. Particular well-placed holes are manufactured in slab, and utilizing a hose or other equipment, a cement grout is moved beneath the slab. This fills any rooms underneath the slab, so when the blend hardens, the slab is raised or offered help. This method is non-disruptive, has low-cost in comparison with slab replacement (which range from one half to one-third), and requires short amount of time. However, occasionally, the blend could possibly get into sewer lines, and this can be a bit of a challenge. This method is comparable to slabjacking, other than, in the place of cement, polyurethane foam is pumped below the slab. This foam expands on combination or releases fuel bubbles, that will help enhance the slab. However, because of the utilization of foam, the method does get a great deal costlier. The holes manufactured in the slab for foam jacking are much smaller compared to those manufactured in slabjacking, hence decreasing the must cover them up. Carbon dietary fiber reinforcement is used to bind splits on wall space, floors, and restore bowed wall space. It makes use of carbon fibre pieces and strongly-binding epoxy resins, along with metal angles. Very first, the element of wall surface is strengthened is identified, and epoxy resin is used throughout the work space. After that, the carbon fibre is glued on it. Finally, the task is completed by correcting metal sides towards the top of the wall. This process needs short amount of time and it is affordable. Sagging beams, uneven flooring tiles, and paid down crawl room might result from damaged earth conditions. To fix this, metal assistance beams are installed, which raise the crawl room to an optimum degree. These steel aids can withstand countless weight. Deciding on the best strategy is dependent on the location of harm, the quantity of damage, and whether or not the damage is internal or external. The common price of basis fixes in the usa is anywhere between $5,000 and $7,000. If foundation of your house is still powerful, you could make yes it remains therefore simply by shopping for the warning signs provided above. If foundation damage is dismissed, then problem gets to be more serious as the days slip by, and you will wind up spending much more in future. Foundation Repair ( «link» )
23:34-- Guest_1638: Did You Know? After the widespread publicity about the dangers of sodium benzoate, Coca Cola, in 2008, decided to reformulate their beverage without adding this compound. Sodium benzoate is well-known for its antimicrobial properties; hence, it is often added in soft drinks and processed foods to lengthen their shelf life. So, when it is used as an additive, it protects food from disease-causing bacteria, yeast, and molds. This compound is naturally found in small amounts in a wide range of fruits, which is not something to worry about. However, the one that is synthesized artificially can be detrimental to health. → Although sodium benzoate helps in preventing mold growth, its interaction with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a cause for grave concern. Its reaction with vitamin C produces benzene that is notorious for causing cancer in humans. A host of studies have shown that long-term exposure to benzene can lead to bone marrow failure and leukemia (blood cancer). → Also, there is a possibility that benzene levels may increase with increase in room temperature and exposure to light. So, on a hot summer day, the soft drink that is kept in your car or the processed juice placed on the store shelf might have higher benzene levels than the prescribed limits for human consumption. → The salad dressing packets, jams available in glass jars, fruit juices packed in tetra packs, pickles sold in small pouches, or packaged shredded cheese, all contain sodium benzoate in small amounts. So, one should not externally add vitamin C to these products in order to prevent any sort of harmful reaction. → Apart from its well-established carcinogenic nature, benzene can damage the liver, lungs, brain, and the heart. It is proven that benzene can alter DNA and cause mutations, eventually leading to cancer. Benzene particularly targets the mitochondria of DNA to cause damage. This benzene-induced DNA damage can also trigger the onset of neurological problems such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. → Taking into account the fatal impact of this deadly combination, in 2006 - 2007, the FDA examined samples of various soft drinks that were sold under different brands. Four beverages that had vitamin C and sodium benzoate as their active ingredients were found to have benzene levels, much higher than the permitted range. The FDA alerted the associated brands, which later reformulated the drinks to bring down the benzene concentration to safe levels. → Sodium benzoate as a preservative is approved by the USFDA and credited with the 'GRAS' status. Presently, the FDA approves up to 0.1% of benzoate in foods. The FDA asserts that benzoate in moderation is not harmful. Sodium benzoate in our diet majorly comes from soft drinks. Too much consumption of soft drinks can raise benzoate levels substantially and increase health risk. → It has also been detected in numerous cosmetic products. So, caution has to be exercised when using cosmetics, to reduce its exposure. Increased Hyperactivity in Children A 2007 study published in Lancet, a weekly peer-reviewed medical journal, showed sodium benzoate to be a hyperactive ingredient that can cause behavioral problems in children. In this study, 3-year-old and 8- to 9-year-old children were given a diet devoid of benzoate preservatives. When they started taking a drink that was laced with a combination of sodium benzoate and color additives (dyes), children exhibited hyperactive behavior. Yet, it is not clear whether this increased hyperactivity is solely from exposure to benzoate. However, there are concerns that ADHD children exposed to sodium benzoate may show exacerbation in their symptoms. Whether a product contains this compound or not, can be easily found out by checking the nutrition fact label. One will find sodium benzoate printed on the food label. As far as limiting exposure to this preservative is concerned, one should eat fewer packaged foods as well as reduce the consumption of soft drinks.Disclaimer: The information provided in this article is solely for educating the reader. 23:46-- Guest_8858: Did You Know? It really is a myth that brand-new houses do not require basis fixes. In fact, foundation repairs being done in homes as early as 24 months old!The foundation of a residence is afflicted with several factors, like moisture content into the soil, period, and existence of woods near the household. The most frequent reason for damage to the inspiration is weakening of this earth around and below the basis. This will be both as a result of drought circumstances which cause the soil to dry and contract, pulling during the basis, or as a result of environment voids into the earth, as a result of that the basis sinks, causing the exterior wall surface to revolve, hence harming the building blocks. The easiest method to look at the protection of this basis would be to call a 3rd party structural professional, that will guidance you regarding further plan of action. For informative functions, this short article supply you with the common signs that a property with a negative foundation shows, along side a description of the various methods of restoration which can be undertaken.Signs of a Damaged Foundation☛ Sloping/bowed floors ☛ Doors/windows that stick when opened or closed ☛ Gaps between door/window structures and sills ☛ Leaning/cracked chimney ☛ Gaps between walls therefore the floor/roof ☛ Leakage from the roof ☛ Cracked foundation wall space ☛ Bowing/cracked walls ☛ Nails swallowing out ☛ Wallpaper peeling down by itself ☛ Cracked floors/concrete with or without liquid leakage ☛ liquid buildup around the house after a spell of rain ☛ Uneven roofing ☛ Raised/lowered stairs or porch ☛ shape on walls/roof ☛ Soil separation near basis otherwise cracked soil near basis ☛ Wall rotation ☛ Sunk/lowered foundation Patching is used to fill-up splits in wall space. Epoxy resin can be used to complete these types of cracks. First, shot ports tend to be fixed into the cracks make it possible for the resin to enter all of them effortlessly. After treating, the resin hardens, avoiding additional widening of the cracks and moisture entry. After placing epoxy resin, the shot harbors tend to be eliminated utilizing a hammer. Polyurethane foam may also be used to help keep completely dampness. This is a way which a property with a weak basis is sustained by placing steel piers or heaps beneath it. It starts with excavation for the surface round the foundation, followed by placing the piers and filling the shaft with concrete for power. Grout is placed below the piers to get rid of void spaces and present additional energy. Becoming steady, the piers should achieve the bedrock or load-bearing strata. There are several variations of this method, as explained below.Push piers is a system in which additional support is fond of the home by hydraulically placing metallic piers below it. The piers shift the strain from volatile earth to even more competent soil or bedrock. This technique can be used to either support a preexisting construction, as well as raise a sunken framework, rendering it a long-lasting answer. It's used when the bedrock or powerful strata is close to the top earth.Helical piers are metallic shafts with periodic helices or screw-like turns. They truly are driven like a screw into the floor, as opposed to becoming forced in. They're utilized in elements of challenging soil problems, to move load from volatile upper earth to stronger load-bearing deep soil levels. It's a-deep foundation system that is used more for industrial fundamentals, without domestic people. Helical piers take less room to be inserted, and tend to be always conquer compressive causes or causes arising considering stress. They are usually utilized for bearing less heavy loads, like porches, staircases, etc., and that can actually driven using hand equipment, if you can find space limitations.Steel piers are accustomed to support or raise houses with weakened fundamentals. These are typically driven in to the ground, like drive piers, and weighed down by the load of the house. The steel pipes utilized might subject to deterioration, misalignment, and bending dilemmas, along side becoming quite expensive. It needs less space for operation.Slab piers are acclimatized to support or boost concrete fundamentals that require assistance. It's a tremendously costly procedure, and it has high area constraints. The slab piers could be driven by helical systems or pressed by push pier systems. The strategy transfers force from unstable top earth to deeper, more powerful layers. Whenever slab breaks, more raising of this foundation becomes difficult. Success prices in lifting pieces have already been low. This strategy requires drilling of shafts into the inspiration, thereafter the bottom of the shafts tend to be widened like a bell shape with unique bits. Metal rebars tend to be inserted in to the shaft, before cement is poured engrossed and allowed to dry. This may just take ranging from 1 - 14 days. Later, the home is lifted and put on the bell piers. The disadvantages for this system feature dependence on hefty gear, risk of liquid seepage, and long-time requirement. This process helps stabilize bowing foundation and basement wall space. Bowing occurs because of increased horizontal stress from soil on a wall. Once this force increases beyond a particular limit, the wall surface starts to bulge. In this technique, a several-feet deep opening is dug in to the floor, a couple of feet out of the foundation wall. After that a steel pole is inserted into the foundation wall from within, such that it hits the opening. A steel dish is fixed toward end of pole in the hole, and another is fixed to the other end. Then the pole is tightened, pulling the wall surface support straight. This technique calls for periodic rod-tightening. This process involves placing precast concrete cylinders one upon another, below the basis, to-be stabilized. A hole is dug underneath the basis slab, additionally the cylinders tend to be placed, followed closely by putting the slab upon them. The driving force here is the fat of your home, thus, there's absolutely no previous indication of exactly how deep the cylinders will go. Despite becoming probably the most cost-effective techniques, this has several drawbacks, like misalignment of cylinders because horizontal pressure of earth, breaking of pilings, cylinders inserting too reduced for support, an such like. One significant drawback is, whenever the pilings sink really deep (beyond the refusal point) they may result in the slab to crack. This technique is less time intensive though. That is a variation of the preceding technique. Really the only difference is, inside strategy, a cable or rebar is placed together with the cylinders, therefore keeping all of them in positioning. The full time needed within method is less, as there is no need to hold back through to the concrete gets consolidated. However, there are specific difficulties with this method, more serious one becoming that, as a result of the cable or rebar, the whole line itself is skewed, in the place of individual cylinders into the pressed piling method. Another is that, the holes manufactured in the cylinders for inserting the cables may cause liquid incursion. This technique is pretty like the pushed pilings method, other than, in place of concrete cylinders, steel pilings are used. The extra weight of the house is again the power. The method aims to reduce the disadvantages for the pressed pilings technique, through the use of metallic rather than cement. The time needed inside method is faster, since one doesn't always have to wait till concrete consolidation. But the method may fall victim to deterioration for the metal pilings, failure to attain the refusal point, therefore limiting stability and incurring high price of materials. Also, due to the decreased width of this columns in this case, the stability suffers. One important downside is, when hefty things in the home tend to be reassembled, an uneven load is put on the pilings, which may trigger misalignment. This technique can be used to improve or support sinking foundation slabs. Specific well-placed holes are designed in the slab, and utilizing a hose or some other equipment, a cement grout is moved under the slab. This fills any rooms underneath the slab, and when the blend hardens, the slab is raised or offered support. This technique is non-disruptive, has actually low cost in comparison with slab replacement (which range from 1 / 2 to one-third), and needs very little time. But occasionally, the blend could possibly get into sewer outlines, which are often a little bit of difficulty. This method resembles slabjacking, other than, as opposed to concrete, polyurethane foam is pumped underneath the slab. This foam expands on consolidation or releases gas bubbles, which helps raise the slab. However, as a result of the utilization of foam, the procedure does get a great deal costlier. The holes manufactured in the slab for foam jacking are a lot smaller compared to those produced in slabjacking, therefore reducing the need to cover them up. Carbon fibre reinforcement can be used to bind cracks on wall space, flooring, and restore bowed walls. It utilizes carbon dietary fiber strips and strongly-binding epoxy resins, and steel perspectives. Very first, the element of wall to be strengthened is identified, and epoxy resin is used across workshop. After that, the carbon fiber is glued over it. Finally, the task is finished by fixing metal sides at the top of the wall. This process calls for little time and it is economical. Drooping beams, irregular floor tiles, and reduced crawl room might result from damaged earth problems. To fix this, metal support beams are set up, which improve the crawl space to an optimum degree. These material aids can withstand plenty of fat. Deciding on the best method is determined by the region of damage, the total amount of damage, and perhaps the damage is external or internal. The average price of basis repair works in the usa is between $5,000 and $7,000. If the first step toward your house continues to be strong, you could make yes it continues to be therefore by shopping for the warning signs given above. If foundation harm is ignored, then problem gets to be more serious as time goes by, and you'll become shelling out much more in future. Steel Piers ( «link» )

That's why it's "free time", because you don't get paid to do it, even though it is a requirement of the job. The level of perfection required even at rehearsals would be more than most people could do, let alone handle the stress of performance, where you'd better be better than perfect or expect to lose your job. After all, there are 100 or more well qualified players for every job, management can always find someone younger (cheaper) to do the job. Students undercut pros and not realizing that when they do this, they are helping to insure that there will be less for them in the future. But many managements are doing just that, dumping the pros who were loyal to them for years and hiring students. Budget cuts mean fewer rehearsals, but the same incredibly high standard of performance is expected, so the player gets to make up the difference with, guess what, more unpaid practice time! Budget cuts are rampant due to lack of support from the government, business, or the general population, since most people see no value in what we do, or don't see it as a profession, since after all, don't we have a "real job?" It's not easy to find the passion to create great music under these circumstances, and yet somehow, most of us still manage to to do it, against all odds. Sound stress free to you? What you hear is not what we get! - Mrs C [February 19, 2011] Dear heavens! Not much could be further from the reality of being an orchestra musician. I am completely dumbfounded! - Elssa Green, fl [February 19, 2011] There was a famous study that came out of Northwestern University a while ago relating to high stress careers. The study ranked symphonic musicians second after air traffic controllers when it came to high stress jobs. My first professional gig was as a substitute for the first keyboardist for the L.A. production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in 1990. Michael Crawford was starring, the conductor was extremely demanding, and I knew, being new to the scene, that my performance would make or break my chances of working there. I was told to know my solos "backwards and forwards" (a much more experienced keyboardist had made *one* mistake during a crucial part of the score and was never hired again). I took my pulse after my first piano solo and clocked my heartbeat at 180 beats a minute! Luckily, I had prepared well (hours and hours of practicing) and have made my career playing and conducting Broadway musicals. Stress free job indeed! - Faith S. [February 18, 2011] I'm so disappointed in my lazy son. He's a hack writer with no research skills. I thought we raised him better. - Kundan's Mom [February 18, 2011] I'm going back to school to become astronomer! Sweet. - Renner [February 18, 2011] Maybe you think the orchestral musician's job is stress free but the process of getting that job is anything but stress free. I would estimate that an average of 150 musicians compete for every orchestral job that pays over 50,000$. The audition comes after starting your instrument as a child, studying each week for years, going to music school through a master's degree, and then starting to do the audition route. There are very few openings in the major orchestras each year and the competition is fierce. So maybe it seems that the players are having a good time--I won't deny that there is a lot of satisfaction in the job, but as in any job there is a lot of frustration when performance is not as good as it should be or when your boss -the conductor-is less than competent. FYI-I was in the CLeveland Orchestra for 35 years. - Catharina Meint [February 18, 2011] Have any of you actually TALKED to a professional musician? I don't like to bandy words about people I don't know, but your comments on music being "stressfree" show an incredible amount of ignorance. - Oxford Kitcheng [February 18, 2011] FAIL - AYBABTU [February 18, 2011] hahahaha you're getting your a$$ handed to you. I am a music educator (PhD student) and I opted not to take the professional musician route because to me, it was TOO STRESSFUL! You try having hours of rehearsals, then days of performances. Deal with the aches and pains (yes, we do get injured...that's part of my research interest as well). When I see my performance major colleagues pour out of the rehearsal halls and practice rooms, they are exhausted. It is stressful and grueling work, and I feel for them! Next time, do some actual research. - String Educator [February 18, 2011] Man, and to think that I was totally stressed for no reason at all. Good thing I had this article to inform me that I am, in fact, totally stress free and making a ton on money (rather than, you know, debt!). Whew! What a relief. Thanks for correcting me. - violinist [February 17, 2011] As a musician in an orchestra, the pressure to play perfect is so much stress. I'm not a brain surgeon, so I won't kill anyone when I mess up, but I'll be fired immediately if I play one bad note. Performance anxiety, anyone? - Caitlin [February 17, 2011] This article is mind-bogglingly ignorant. - Eric Lindholm [February 17, 2011] is this a joke! - Nad [February 17, 2011] Um, I'm a professional orchestra musician, and it's far from stress free. You don't just get to play fun music. You have to practice on your own for many hours a day. Then you rehearse as an ensemble. And if you make ANY mistakes, you won't be hired again. Not to mention, that it's difficult not to make errors, hence the hours of daily practice required to be a successful musician. Also, even being able to get into one of these orchestras is very rare and competitive. Often there are 100 top notch musicians auditioning for one position when one opens up. Just thought I'd clear it up that it isn't even remotely a stress free job... - Jennifer [February 17, 2011] Your remarks about Orchestral musicians is inaccurate. While music itself can be very inspiring, the work stress of having to produce a high level aural product under immense pressure is intense. Please see: Why They're Not Smiling: Stress and Discontent in the Orchestral Workplace by Seymour and Robert Levine (search for text of article) - D Sipe [February 17, 2011] holy hell - pierre boulez [February 17, 2011] Being an professional Orchestral Musician is most definitely NOT a stress free job! It might seem like a nice thing to do by a non musician or an amateur. The need to be performing at as close to 100% as you can all the time means that the mentally and physically you usually end a concert worn out. There is a high incidence of injury and many players probably drink a little too much. It is not unusual for professional musicians to take Beta-blockers to help keep their nerves under control. The hours can make a normal social life difficult. The pay is nowhere near as good as it should be. Where I live the local garbage collector gets pay more than a non principal player. The other factor that makes your claim a farce is that you can't just decide to be an orchestral musician and walk into a job. Usually there is at least 4 years of tertiary study which you can only get admitted into if you have reached a suitable standard after 4-5 years of high school and college study. To get a job you have to win an audition. That is convince the selection panel that you suitable for the position in a very short audition (usually anonymously being a screen) competing against all other applicants. In some jobs there are hundreds of applicants many of whom are better qualified and more experienced. One little slip can cost you your chance of winning the job. In many cases the selection panel chooses not to appoint anyone. This may just be for a part time position. Doesn't sound so stress free now... - frasercat [February 17, 2011] Should I even add... stage freight? You can be the world's most wonderful musician, but if you have stage freight... that's stress, dear one... that's stress, and a lot of it - B [February 17, 2011] Try getting an orchestra job, while yes they are rewarding as a profession, they also have the highest "job availability to qualified applicants" ratio. A little different than a Yoga instructor. Last orchestra audition I went to, there were 108 HIGHLY qualified musicians, battling for 1 spot in an orchestra that paid a salary of $34,000 per year. That ratio goes up as the salary goes up. ALso, once you win one of those positions, keeping it requires you to ALWAYS be at the top of your game. I would compare it to a professional golfer, only without the endorsements. - anon [February 17, 2011] An orchestra musician is one of the toughest jobs to take over, as you often teach private lessons and some people work more than one orchestra or job. There is always a time crunch to get things done if you want to make a decent living these days. Yes, it is gratifying to each person, but it is also VERY stressful, and this industry is one of the hardest to make it in, and on top of that it is not very stable in some areas, for example, look at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. That is all. - James [February 17, 2011] An orchestra musician? Really? Even the healthy ones take heart medicine for performances. It's the whole get-it-right-once-on-the-spot-in-front-of-hundreds-of-people-or-you-lose-your-job that really does them in. And pastry chefs? Florists? Hello, holidays and weddings! These people are not stress free. You need to write this article again, and come up with something more accurate. - Jessie [February 17, 2011] More research is needed, I think. I'm acquainted with several professional instrumentalists, and they will tell you--orchestra positions are difficult to procure and competitive in maintenance, making it periodically stressful with lots of practice time required to retain one's seat. They DO enjoy it, but it's not exactly stress-free: there's the periodic concern that someone better will come along and oust you. I can't speak as to the stress levels of any of the other jobs, though. - Cara [February 17, 2011] Orchestral musician should be taken off this list. - frank [February 17, 2011] Interesting that all these jobs are equally stressfull in their own way but only the musicians are here whining about it. Everybody else is too busy WORKING. - ftw [February 17, 2011] You are pretty far from reality... Some orchestra musicians take beta blocker on a regular basis to cope with stress. Salaries too can be much lower than what you quoted. - Tom G [February 17, 2011] My orchestra job pays a fraction of what you claim, and is far, far from stress free. Rewarding? Incredibly so. But stress free? That is utterly laughable. "Under no hurry of job timings"? Every second of what I do is under a time constraint. If I waiver the the slightest bit from the conductor's timing, I risk being called out and humiliated in front each and every one of my colleagues. And that's just in rehearsal- let's not talk about what happens if I make a mistake in performance, with 2000 pairs of eyes and ears on me! - Sheridan Currie [February 17, 2011] As a retired professional orchestral basoonist and a current high-school band teacher, I can say that the section about orchestral musicians is utter tripe. I moved states and took this band job to be closer to my family; I then found that organizing 300 fifteen to eighteen year olds into a cohesive unit is FAR less stressful than my time as an orchestral musician. Whomever wrote this article did not do adequate research and has absolutely no clue the hourly schedule or stress levels induced on orchestral musicians by conductors, board of directors, critics, etc. - Cody Harrell [February 17, 2011] Musician - except for the fact that all orchestras are facing severe pay cuts, universally. - Rachel [February 17, 2011] Orchestra music is an extraordinarily stressful job - playing huge and difficult masterworks with zero margin for error on insufficient rehearsal is _not_ stress-free. - jg [February 17, 2011] BWAHAHAHAHAHAH I just peed a little...I thought this article was serious for a second, and I was going to comment as an irate orchestral musician. I get paid, for the record, less than $20,000 a year for my orch job, and I'm aging prematurely from the stress and pressure. But then I saw you put "pastry chef" and knew this article must be a joke. Everyone knows those guys are under enormous pressure. - [February 17, 2011] I am an orchestral musician, and I can attest that my job is not "stress free." While it can be rewarding, it is actually a high-pressure situation where you have to play with near perfection on the spot. There have been studies that say playing in an orchestra is actually one of the most stressful jobs. It might help if the author of this article interviewed people who have these jobs before he/she makes the judgment they are stress-free. That notion is also probably erroneous, since there can be stress in any given situation. - Kara [February 17, 2011] We should not be surprised at this article, since the author has penned such other masterpieces like: "Lion of Judah Tattoo," "Aluminum Can Crusher," and his pièce de résistance, "Baby Diarrhea." - The Verv [February 17, 2011] As I said before you deleted my comment, I think the least stressful job is writing articles were you just make things up. - Michael [February 17, 2011] Why are you deleting comments? You can choose to reinstate mine or not, but please do take them seriously. - Kay [February 17, 2011] You moron. Is pro football player on your list too because they only work an hour a week for 16 weeks? - Matt [February 17, 2011] Really uninformed of the rigors of orchestral players - BOBO [February 17, 2011] Stability? - Nice [February 17, 2011] Please put my comment back. Thank you. Censoring your comments will not help your cause. - Sarah Sheppard [February 17, 2011] Orchestral Musician actually one of most stressFULL jobs around. You have to be perfect all of the time and play exactly as the conductor says, or else you will be auditioning against over 200 people for another "stress free" job! - Bill [February 17, 2011] If playing professionally in orchestras is your only source of income, you will surely be living a very stressful life and you will almost as surely have a low income. - Marnix [February 17, 2011] You suggest in your disclaimer that stress and job satisfaction are inversely proportional to one another. I wonder what leads you to that conclusion. And do you propose an equality between the experiences of the professional and the client? Seemingly, you assume that the stress benefits one associates with receiving a massage, going to yoga class and attending an orchestral concert translate to those providing the service. Have you interviewed many orchestral musicians, massage therapists or yoga instructors? I suspect not. I think I may become a journalist. No study is required, and I just can't wait to get some of that fanciful drivel out of my head and onto paper where it will become fact. Or am I making assumptions? - Jon Holden. [February 17, 2011] Besides having once been a professional musician, I'm going to ignore your ignorance on that score and say a few things about being a pastry chef instead:Most pastry chefs and bakers in France (where I live) start their days at 4am and end at 7pm. They work 6 days a week, 51 weeks a year, running their own bakeries and pastisseries (pastry shops). On my street alone there are 4 bakeries within walking distance. In my town there are probably 30. That's ALOT of competition. Not only do these chefs have to be careful and vigilant about quality, they are also running their own business, and they don't make that much money. Cakes, cookies cost 2 Euros, a croissant 1 Euro (and that's expensive), a baguette is 85 cents. Everything is made fresh everyday, and they have to throw out whatever they don't sell at the end of the night costing them probably hundreds of Euros in lost/wasted ingredients. Please tell me how a pastry chef is making 65000 a year in profit? And how working from 4am to 7pm without any normal two day weekend or vacation is stress free?Maybe in starred restaurants a pastry chef would make that much money, but those positions are RARE and hardly any less stress free than your local baker. - Holly [February 17, 2011] I wouldn't be surprised if the author were also a Holocaust denier. - Donald [February 17, 2011] hmmmm ... clearly whomever wrote this has not spoken with very many orchestra musicians. - Bob [February 17, 2011] While being an orchestral musician is fulfilling and rewarding, it is definately not without great stress! They must be ON all the time, the concentration that goes into a rehearsal, the hours practicing difficult parts and the peer pressure would be over the top for most folks. Plus now, many musicians are constantly bargaining as to how much their salary will go down, usually not up. - French Horn [February 17, 2011] Ha ha! this is funny! As an actual yoga instructor (not the imaginary kind) I can tell you most of us do not make anywhere near $62k teaching yoga. If I did, maybe I would have a "stress free life." Except I would be working so much that I would never see my family or have time to eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom. - yogamom [February 17, 2011] The assertion that the job of orchestral musician is low stress is absurd!Playing a musical instrument is an endurance exercise task. Musicians are elite athletes.Medical studies document the career expectations of a professional orchestral musician-- can expect (in the US) to live 20-22 years less than the general public- David Sternbach- Stress in the Lives of Musicians- can expect to have a 60% risk of musculoskeletal injury during their careers- Dr. Boni Reitveid- The Dutch Performing Arts Clinic- can statistically expect moderate to severe hearing loss- Dr. Olaf van Hees- Hearing Impediments in Musicians- will have a 32% risk of prolonged periods of anxiety and a 28% risk of periods of depression- Dr. Ian James- Results of FIM Orchestra Questionnaire- will have a 70% risk of experiencing performance anxiety during their orchestral careers which will have an adverse effect on their playing- IbidThe prevalence of medical problems among orchestral musicians is very high. In a 1987 survey ICSOM musicians reported that 82% were experiencing a medical problem and that 76% listed at least one problem a severe in terms of its effect on their performance. The questionnaire allowed respondents to indicate up to four severe problems: 12% of musicians reported one severe problem, 14% indicated two, 12% listed three, and fully 36% reported four severe problems.- Medical Problems Among ICSOM Musicians: Overview of a National Survey"The technical precision expected of orchestral musicians may not even permit slight changes in technique or timing that may be necessary to accommodate a developing painful condition".- Dr. Fadi Bejjani- "Musculoskeltal and Neuromuscular Conditions of Instrumental Musicians" (Arch Phys Med Rehabil, Vol 77 (April 1996)Orchestral performance is a very demanding, high-stress activity. Some of the many causes of stress to symphony musicians are physical strain, performance in public, unrealistic performance expectations, constant scrutiny of highly critical conductors and colleagues at all times, physical vulnerability, irregular work schedules, constantly rotating supervision, shifting work locations, work hazards, ageism, conductor, problems with instrument, playing an orchestral solo, illegible music, disorganized rehearsal time, incompatible desk partner, medical problems which affect work, making a mistake when performing, worrying about finances in case of accident or injury, muscle pain, poor sight lines, fatigue, inadequate seating, touring, long rehearsals, inadequate concert preparation, child care arrangements, returning to work from an illness or childbirth, no balance of repertoire and programming, poor scheduling, - Mark Tetreault [February 17, 2011] There’s another one they missed from on the list: Freelance Web JournalistThis is a very easy job to do. When commissioned to write an article on, say, stress free jobs, there’s no need for any anxiety-inducing research, or the stressful "thinking" that comes with most jobs. With peace in mind and heart, simply sit in your front room with some (decaff!) coffee and make up some stuff based on how it appears to you! Freelance web journalists can make up to USD 500,000 for coming up with any old tosh. - Very Cross [February 17, 2011] As an orchestra musician my job never ends. I'm practicing five hours a day to learn the music I need to know by my "deadline" of a concert or first rehearsal. When you have the number of concerts to prepare that I have it is far from easy. When you are professional you have to be at your best ALL the time. It is a totally different mindset from the amateur musician who plays for fun, believe me! - Timothy Judd [February 17, 2011] Uh - what? One study found that orchestral musicians ranked JUST above prison guards (which was the most stressful of all!) Orchestral musicians have very little control over their lives - don't decide what to play, when to play it, how to play it. Have very erratic schedules, suffer from sleep deprivation because of those erratic schedules. Even section leaders, who may seem to not play as much in some of the most well-paid orchestras, have a ton of responsibility. Look closely at the faces of most professional orchestra musicians and you're not going to see bliss and lack of worry. - RO Musician [February 17, 2011] that would beICSOM . org - sorry, I had to space them out since HTML is not allowed and accidentally typed it incorrectly. - JG [February 17, 2011] You require additional research.I suggest a google search that'll give you about 285,000 results in 0.10 seconds on orchestral musician's salaries, and from there you can select from several possible sites. May I also suggest additional research at iscom - and that only includes the top 50 or so orchestras in the country, not the other regional and freelance orchestras, which make considerably less annual salary. Also, a fantastic article to read was written by Jeremy Mastrangelo, associate concertmaster of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra - an organization fighting hard to stay afloat this season with about $260,000 still needed to keep musicians workingAs a former teacher once told me, "Please avail yourself to these [articles] so that you may improve your understanding of what it takes to be a professional musician." I don't mean to tell you how to do your job - in return, please don't assume you know what it is to do ours. - JG [February 17, 2011] You have seriously got to be high if you think that an orchestral musician is a stress free job. - God [February 17, 2011] Please research your decisions properly. Orchestral musicians do not typically make the amount of money that you state, nor does what they make even possibly cover what they have spent in time, education, travel, instruments, instrument care and insurance. Most musicians that I know require SEVERAL jobs in order to maintain their music. Now with cuts in funding for arts and arts education, those that desire to pursue a career in music are going to be even harder pressed to do so.I am getting a PhD in Arts Administration and Cello Performance. I ask you, on behalf of those who love the arts and the artists in our lives, please do not make our hard earned careers out to be a walk in the park. There is nothing easy about life in the arts. - AGR [February 17, 2011] I'm actually angry with you for perpetuating the myths about my profession. You're a jerk, and you probably wouldn't know Beethoven if he bit you in the *ss. - Lammermoor [February 17, 2011] Yes, become an orchestral musician...just go back in time to when you were 3 years old, pick an instrument and start practicing 4-8 hours a day. Every day. For the rest of your life. GIve up anything else you might be interested in, and have your parents pay for expensive music lessons, camps, and arts schools. And then maybe, MAYBE if you're lucky, you'll get an audition for a low-paying, mediocre orchestra. And if you're lucky enough to win a spot after about 50 auditions, then get ready to practice even harder... - ignorantarticle [February 16, 2011] Orchestra musicians today lack the job secuirty the previous generation enjoyed. Symphonies are a phenomenon in transition. Plus, they dare deal with high competition, shrinking paychecks, and long practice hours. Many supplement their income with students and weddings. - Reb [February 16, 2011] Ok, so the orchestra musician comment was uninformed, but let's be honest--this guy seems really sweet and naive. I WISH playing in an orchestra was like that. We're all a little quick to jump down his throat because the general public doesn't respect our profession as much as they should. But he wasn't insulting anyone. - Juilliard11 [February 16, 2011] Being an orchestral musician is far from a stress-free job. It is one that can often involve a great deal of stress, stemming from a variety of factors. It also takes 10-20 years of training, most of which are blood, sweat, and tears. Not to mention, a lot of schooling. - Tristan [February 16, 2011] this is silly! being an orchestra musician is stressful because you have to be perfect all the time or else you get fired! - orch musician [February 16, 2011] Whoever wrote this article should be beyond embarrassed. I'd be insulted by his/her description of an orchestral musician's life except that I'm pretty sure that he/she is a 5-year-old--or a person of comparable mental sophistication. - Violinist [February 16, 2011] Do you not know anything about musicians?! Being an orchestral musician is about as stressful a job as it gets! - clarinetress [February 16, 2011] Do you know ANYTHING about professional musicians? Do you have any idea how competitive this field is, how many auditions orchestral musicians take (at their own expense) or the level of perfection demanded of them every day? Orchestral musicians actually have a lower rate of job satisfaction than plumbers...do some research before publishing next time. - Kristen [February 16, 2011] Very humerous that after 2 years your article has finally found a bunch of musicians. Some of which have tendonitis, back issues, other arm problems, scar tissue and blood. It's fun, but it is so far from stress free, no no way. - Justin [February 16, 2011] Orchestra musicians have an extremely rigorous schedule that includes not only rehearsals, but 4-7 hours of individual practice every day. On top of that, most of them started working at their craft at a VERY young age (3-6) and the level of perfection that is required in each performance creates a level of stress that is unimaginable to the average person. If you add up the number of hours needed to win an orchestra job (4-6 hours a day from the age of 3-6) it is one of the most underpaid professions in the world. But yes, music is beautiful and enjoyable. That doesn't make the profession stress-free. - strad86 [February 16, 2011] Dude, Try going through a tenure process in an american professional orchestra, wow - Justin [February 16, 2011] I'd love it if you were to share your research findings that support the opinions you mention in this article. I am not following or believing most of them, so seeing your research would be most helpful to better understand. - Barry [February 16, 2011] Kundan,In addition to all of these indignant responses that you need to read to understand why you are wrong, please also read this article: http : // blog.syracuse . com/opinion/2010/09/making_music_the_work_of_a_syr.html#mode_smoref_face . It's a fantastic illustration that went viral in the professional classical music world about 6 months ago, of why people like you are so ill-conceived about our industry. Please do some research next time before touching the proverbial pen to the paper. - Indignant [February 16, 2011] I am a classical musician. I have spent my entire professional career making $10,000/year from my orchestra while working a minimum wage job on the side for another mere $8,500/year in order to pay my rent! When I'm not working 40 hours a week AND rehearsing, my remaining time is taken up commuting to work/rehearsal, sleeping, and practicing to try to land a better orchestral job by winning a long-shot audition in which there are 150 other qualified candidates, all competing for one coveted position. If I don't spend 25 hours a week practicing, it's been a bad week. Practicing is tiring, time-consuming, and tremendously stressful. Auditions never accept recordings - you must show up live. In short, I will likely spend hundreds of hours preparing for an audition, and hundreds of dollars that I can't afford traveling to the audition, and I will not even have a shot at winning. That doesn't even touch on the politics in the classical music world, which is another stressful ballgame entirely. To suggest that classical musicians live stress-free lives is a testament to your ignorance. Classical musicians who make more than $25,000/year are on the far left-hand side of the bell curve. Do some research next time. - Musician [February 16, 2011] I'm sure you've heard this from several people already, but the assessment of the orchestral profession is simply not accurate on almost every single level. I'm currently a student training for said profession. I've been working at this for 11 years straight, every day, and I am still not at the level necessary to win a job. Getting one of these "stress free jobs" requires high-stress auditions, many of which are rigged from start. These auditions entail performing for anywhere between 4 and 50 people who are intent on hearing every mistake you make. If you are lucky enough to be the one person (out of hundreds) to win, then you enter into a position in which you are doing something incredibly difficult day in and day out, and are expected, nay, REQUIRED to be absolutely perfect whilst still maintaining some level of artistry. The amount of stress involved in this is so high that anybody actually paying attention might wonder why ANYONE would want this job, but it comes down to a love of the creation of art and beauty, not in attaining these "stress free jobs" you insist exist. Your final egregious error is in the insistence that there is some sort of stability in this profession. Orchestras are folding left and right, due to a lack of interest in music requiring an attention span beyond 3 minutes worth of strummed chords. Hell, there's even a high profile example (the Detroit Symphony) in the news right now! The only part of this section that is correct in any sense is the intellectual and spiritual satisfaction of good performances; other than that, you simply didn't do the research. I can only guess that you wrote this as some fantasy scenario of a profession you know nothing about after wondering "Man, what would it be like to play an instrument for a living instead of writing articles for a website nobody cares about?" Next time, PLEASE just talk to somebody before you make broad sweeping generalizations and belittle someone else's hard work... - Tim [February 16, 2011] Orchestral Musician? Seriously? What jerk wrote this article? But I'm sure you know what you're talking about - a job in a dying industry that you can get fired from for human error is definitely stress free! And we certainly don't have to be to rehearsals and concerts on time! It's all a big happy fun fest!Next time, actually talk to the people in the industry. - Mr. Musician [February 16, 2011] I cannot speak my opinions for any profession listed here except for that of "Orchestra Musician". Pandey obviously did no research, because no orchestral musician would ever say that their life is relatively stress-free. When you have to spend months, sometimes years, preparing for a single audition where sometimes more than a hundred people are vying for the same spot, the stress is extremely high. Even if one gets a full-time orchestra job, most positions do not pay nearly as much as Pandey describes in this article. Music is what we love, that is true, but even the most gratifying of musical experiences cannot wipe away the constant stress that floods our lives. - irm [February 16, 2011] Stress-free? Great pay? Stability? No hectic schedules? ROFL! What a fantastic humor piece. You guys really know how to do irony. That was even better than most viola jokes. Now, back to reality... - Violinist [February 16, 2011] About the musician thing, yes, all this stuff said above is true. But even on top of that, if you actually have the energy to put any emotion into the music after doing all the other stuff you do during the day, the physical and emotional stress you put yourself through just to get those emotions across wears you out. It can change your moods, affect your personal life, cause people to ... KILL THEMSELVES...LITERALLY. - thediktatr [February 16, 2011] if you think being an orchestra musician is stress free -- obviously you have never been a working musician - Susan Strohm [February 16, 2011] I'm not exactly sure were this information was found but as an orchestral musician, you have an extremely stressful work place (and also free time because you're constantly practicing). Also, the salaries are not at all accurate. In order to even get a 50,000 a year job (depending on the instrument) you will be competing with easily 150 other musicians for one spot. - concerned [February 16, 2011] This is one of the most under researched articles i have ever read. As a freelance musician, i am absolutely shocked to think that anybody could believe that being an orchestral musician is "pure stress relief". Are you kidding me?! For goodness sake- we barely survive! With little to no job prospects, huge competition, and grueling expectations from both colleagues, the audition committee and the audience, we have hit the jackpot if we even HAVE an orchestral job- most of which are highly unstable, as most orchestras are going out of business as we speak. None of the orchestras i work with make even a fraction of the salary that was mentioned in this article, and after attending the best music schools in the country, i can say that less than 1% of my colleagues have been able to attain the jobs that do. Those that have are inherently unhappy and feel under-fulfilled, due to the lack of job market prospects and lack of control over their destiny. Classical music is one of the most difficult careers anybody can choose to have, and i routinely recommend parents to not push their children into it unless they plan to support them until they die. - Adele Ohki [February 16, 2011] Wow. You are SERIOUSLY misinformed about professional musicians. - Alex [February 16, 2011] Wow. You could not be more wrong about the stress levels of an orchestra musician. Did you know that some musician reach stress levels equal to that of aircraft controllers. Who is your source, and do they have a self help book? I guess writing factually incorrect and unresearch articles is a little stressful too. - Austin [February 16, 2011] LOL! to the author of this article: please interview at least one professional musician. Unbelievable! - joe [February 16, 2011] Orchestra musician, a stress-free job? We are starving artists and VERY busy. That is just so false. - Laura [February 16, 2011] This article completely sux. - ArticleSux [February 16, 2011] Is this a joke? - Dan [February 16, 2011] Are you stupid? No job timings or hectic work schedules for an orchestra musician? Did you even ASK an orchestra musician about this? Wow. - Musician [February 16, 2011] I find it very interesting that this Physics major turned online article writer would comment on stress free jobs. I would assume that writing is relatively stress free as you are able to write freely about whatever it is that comes to your mind, without being concerned about the facts, research, credibility, et al. Was Physics too stressful for you? - OrchManager [February 16, 2011] Don't think that orchestral musician belongs on this list... - Phil Smith [February 16, 2011] Did anyone actually interview an orchestral musician before writing this article? It is not a stress free job at all, there is incredible pressure to perform well without mistakes. Definitely not a stress free job. No wonder the fine arts have such a bad rep with bunk like this being spread around. - [February 16, 2011] Are you kidding me with this list? As a professional musician, my life (and my colleauge's lives) tend to be anything but "relaxing" and "stress-free." No hectic work schedules? I have rehearsals and performances 7 days of the week. If I'm lucky I get a Monday off on occasion. No hurry with job timings? In order to make ends meet, I sometimes have to stack other gigs or teaching on either side of the rehearsal. Let's hope there's no traffic, because if I'm late, I'll probably never be hired back. Ever. Definitely not paid. No anxiety or stress about trying to make music happen? Trying to win a job can be nearly impossible, as there are maybe 1-3 job openings PER YEAR for your instrument in the United States that have the salaries you mentioned. Playing a musical instrument essentially demands physical, mental, and emotional perfection in so many areas and dimensions. (Black Swan anyone?) Stability of work? At least 4 orchestras have gone under financially in the last 3 years, not to mention the hundreds of cutbacks in the arts and general freelancing. Even the "top 5" orchestras are facing cutbacks. The arts are, usually the first to go as we're seeing with new budget cuts proposed. Talk to an "orchestra musician" before you publish something completely inaccurate just so YOU can make ends meet. I understand that as journalist, it must be tough sometimes, maybe even stressful, and I respect that. But notice how the quality of your work goes unchecked and you still get paid. Not always the case for the "stress-free" gigs. - Worst article [February 16, 2011] Orchestra musician? Really? Have you ever met or talked to an orchestra musician? Did they tell you about having to compete against 200 other musicians for one opening? And "stability?" When orchestras are folding and in financial distress all over the country? Maybe an orchestra musician in Detroit would have something to say on the subject. Have you read the survey results that ranked the job of orchestral musician as second-most-stressful to that of air traffic controller? This article is laughable. - D.J.S. [February 16, 2011] "Orchestra musician" as one of the most stress free occupations? There is almost no accurate information in this delightfully uninformed little blurb. I would argue that writing on "Buzzle" should be substituted as a "stress free occupation", since clearly no investigation is needed for what is written, and I'm going to assume that someone was actually paid to write that. Life must be very good for that lazy, unintelligent peon! - Musician [February 16, 2011] Ha! Orchestra musician stress-free?! No. They work HARD to get their music ready. Also, auditions are VERY competitive to get into professional orchestras. Those folks know hard work and stress as well as anyone. - DB [February 16, 2011] The author obviously hasn't talked to any professional musicians if he thinks it is a stress free life. It's true that at the pinnacle of the profession there are likely a few folks living the good life, but other than a very talented few, the others have spent a lifetime of stress an toil (and lots of ramen noodles) getting to that point. - Jason A. [February 16, 2011] Orchestra musician? Are you kidding? Man! Maybe LISTENING to music is stress free, but performing it is certainly not! And pay well? I don't think so! Just like some other jobs, there are a small number overall that pay well, but most do not, and musicians put together a lot of small paying jobs to make ends meet. In my orchestra the pay averages under $10,000 a year with NO benefits. That's cause for a LOT of stress... - Cheryl Everill [February 16, 2011] This article must be a joke. Orchestra musicians have incredibly hectic schedules. First of all, the pay scale you are referring to is really only for the higher level orchestras in major cities. In order to even qualify for that job, you have to practice hours each day for years and years, usually from childhood, and you audition in a highly competitive environment. Then, once you have that job, you are subject to a rigorous rehearsal, performance, and touring schedule that is not at all flexible. You have to continually learn new music very quickly. Most orchestra musicians I know also teach, which means that they have to juggle their performance schedule with their teaching schedule. - musicianforhire [February 16, 2011] Please research your facts before you post more uninformed garbage on the internet. You have no idea what you are talking about. You clearly know nothing about working as an orchestral musician. It is a highly stressful job that pays very poorly. - PH [February 16, 2011] Are you serious? Making music that is pleasing to others is hardly stress free much less making a living playing music. Do some research on how many orchestra jobs are open that pay 50,000 to 150,000 and see how many apply for them. So misinformed. - Research is ok [February 16, 2011] As a professional musician I couldn't disagree more with this perception that playing in an symphony orchestra is a stress free job. This person obviously does not know that an orchestra job that pays a $50,000 salary is actually chock full of a stressful and hectic scheduling since programming several different pieces usually requires many hours of individual preparation. Especially if the group performs more than one concert a week then every concert program would be different. The pressure and demand for accuracy and musicianship that is placed on a performing musician is, in fact, quite substantial. While I agree that it is a fullfilling profession, it is most certainly not stress free. - BW [February 16, 2011] As an orchestra musician, I resent your implication that we are simply on stage having fun. It may appear so, but as entertainers, that is part of our job. We are under constant pressure to perform at an extremely high level, as close to perfect as possible. With a 3-4 hour rehearsal each day, 3-4 performances each weekend, and 2 hours of personal practice each day, being a musician requires much more concentration than your typical job. Factor in the strain of working nights and weekends, having to miss school plays and baseball games, the athletic nature of keeping your muscles and tissues healthy, and the intense amount of pressure to simply GET one of these jobs, and I think it is safe to say that being an orchestra musician is one of the MOST stressful jobs a person can have. - Horn Player [February 16, 2011] ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? Clearly, you are not an orchestral musician. CLEARLY. Not only do you have your facts on the salary completely wrong, the stress-free part is also wrong. We aren't as responsible for human life as a doctor is, and you are correct in saying we love our job. We are quite fortunate to do what we love, but a lot of other professionals love what they do too. We have a time schedule, and have to come to work on time...and with ample time to warm up and prepare for the concert. We also have to learn hundreds of minutes of music each week, for at least 35 weeks a year, and only every few years we see a piece twice. Starting salary in orchestral life can be as little as $25,000 a year as well. You need to research your facts before writing such a ridiculous article. - J. Richison [February 16, 2011] Orchestral Musician stress free? What a joke! - OrchMus [February 16, 2011] I would like to point out that being a musician is quite far from being a stress free job. If you're one of the very few and very lucky to be hired by an orchestra, count your blessings. But, considering that a job opening at a symphony can have hundreds of applicants, and that there may only be three or four in a year, I would not proclaim the musician's life as stress free. I won't even bother going into the amount of work, time, and STRESS it takes to reach the level where you can begin to take these auditions. - anonyomous [February 16, 2011] Being an orchestral musician is anything but stress free. Our schedules are hectic and perfection is the unattainable goal we all strive for. Performing classical music is hard work, requires hours of practicing a day, a busy rehearsal schedule, and doing it is NOT stress relief. Perhaps it is stress relief for the amateur musician who does it as a hobby, but whoever wrote this did NO research on what it takes to become or maintain a career as a professional musician. "Job timings" are not flexible AT ALL and one usually must play a concert on only 3-4 rehearsals, of which you have no control over the timing. Also, a majority of orchestra jobs pay well under $40,000. Peace of mind and heart are not present when a conductor is breathing down your back to play everything perfectly at his whim, not to mention "perfect" is completely an objective term when it comes to music. Also, in the faltering economy, many orchestras across the country are cutting pay, and even cutting orchestras who can't stay afloat financially. I don't call that "job stability," do you? This article is the most uninformed crap I have ever seen regarding the classical music profession. - Sarah [February 16, 2011] This is really a horrible assessment of stress-free jobs. A chef's job is full of stress; their creations are constantly being evaluated by customers. A pastry chef has to get up very early in the morning to start the day, and there is always the chance that something could go wrong while baking. Astronomers have to write grant proposals and wait to get funding to do their research, a very stressful position to be in. Orchestral musicians first must get into the orchestra, which involves rigorous auditions and constant rejection, with no guarantee they will ever get the high-paying job. Aside from this, they must worry about personal injury from repetitive strain ruining their career. - Mercy [January 28, 2011] Where you get your information is beyond my comprehension-all jobs have stress, and these days, North Americans in general work long hours compared to other countries to satisfy the 'want vs. need' illness, and line shareholders pockets. The lack of work life balance in North America is nauseating. Turn off your cell phones/stop working past the hours you get paid for/take your weekends off and stop answering emails after hours. This has to be the dumbest article I have ever read. And, as a college prof-you would not believe the stress there is! It's how you handle it. Professors do not 'get the summer off'-they are constantly producing publications and researching. Do your research! - M Fortin [November 7, 2010] No such thing as a stress-free job. Those who have a flexible work schedule such as the massage therapist and yoga instructor are often paid per client. Less clients equals less money. Sure, you can choose to work as little as you want but ultimately you are at the whim of when your clients want to see you. - Keith [November 26, 2009] plumbers ( «link» )

0:20-- Guest_9918: is der any jobs for any 1 we no excperins - steven [August 24, 2011] May I say, as a Librarian, we obviously don't winge as much as other professionals, as I know so many people think we are not stressed! But keeping a study environment is HARD work and face to face battles over fines is ... oh, you get the picture! - Norm [August 18, 2011] You left out Politicions------highest paying stress-free job I know of - hbclodfelter [March 3, 2011] I know a bit about the life of a professional musician, but it appears that many have already found your page, so I will let that subject rest. Where do you get the idea that a pastry chef's job is stress free! You have clearly never set foot in the back of the house of a food establishment. - Stephanie [February 24, 2011] test - test [February 22, 2011] I used to be a professional musician. Then I switched professions to become a lawyer, because it's less stressful. - R [February 20, 2011] I think he forgot to include one profession: writing! Apparently you can write anything and call it a finished product! - Stressed [February 20, 2011] It would appear that the job of writing this article will turn out to include some stress... I mean, any writer whose skin is no less thick than a Teflon pan would be bothered to have their work receive such fervent and sustained criticism... ouch, man, you really seem to have hit a nerve with some stressed out musicians! Don't get too close to any cello endpins is my advice while this all blows over (the wind section)! - Andrea Stuart [February 20, 2011] This might be the most clueless article I have ever read. The author clearly has no experience in these fields - JJScott [February 20, 2011] On behalf of thousands of orchestral musicians everywhere I just wanted to say that most full-time orchestral musicians make less than $30000 a year and unless you are blissfully ignorant in your orchestral position I would safely say that most orchestral musicians endure a great deal of pressure to perform at a high level not only in every concert, but every rehearsal. That being said, yes I do love my job... but it is a lifelong mission to deal with the stress that comes with it. - a musician [February 19, 2011] I do not agree that an orchestral musician is a stress-free job. As a musician and friend of orchestral musicians, the stress can be quite high. In no other profession are we expected to be absolutely perfect and can be fired if not. Even doctors have malpractice insurance in case of a mess up, but you won't find that with an orchestral musician. - Musician [February 19, 2011] http : // blog.syracuse . com/opinion/2010/09/making_music_the_work_of_a_syr.html#mode_smoref_faceCensoring doesn't change the facts. You know nothing about the orchestral musician's life. The cost of the education and the investment in equipment is staggering! The schedule is completely irregular, and plays havoc with one's personal life, (if you can have one at all). You must be early to all work scheduled, or you would be considered late, and there are no excuses. Try handling the schedules of various playing commitments for different organizations, and sweating in traffic when you have to get from one job to another on time. Take on less work? Sorry, none of the jobs pays enough for you to live on. When at home trying to have a family life, most of your "free" time has to be spent practicing/ reedmaking for hours preparing for rehearsals. - Keith [November 26, 2009] plumbing companies ( «link» )
